An archipelago of 12 islets and 2 main islands, where the ancient Romans and Austro-Hungarians left numerous vestiges. Veliki Brijun (Big Island), 15 minutes by boat from the port of Fažana and bordered by a canal, is the closest to the mainland and the largest. The island that visitors discover almost exclusively was the Yugoslav presidential residence under Marshal Tito from 1956 until 1991. A national park since 1983, it retains a rich historical heritage, while the island's nature is lush in a Mediterranean climate that is relatively mild in winter.
