Inland, around 25 km from Labin, this small, traditional village is well served by road. It was first settled by Slavs in the 6th century. In the 13th century, Barban belonged to the fief of Pazin, then passed into Venetian hands in the 16th century. The ancient city walls are still standing, as are the large and small gates. The locality has revived a Ring Festival (Prstinac), created in 1696, cancelled in the 18thcentury and reinstated in 1976. Competing riders in period costume enter the main street and attempt to place their spears through metal rings.
