This fajã has been inhabited without interruption since at least 1550 or 1560, when there are records of its inhabitants. Its hermitage is thought to have been built around 1550. Its microclimate and abundant water sources have made it possible to grow vines and fruit, as well as a limited production of coffee beans. While the fajã was once the preferred summer resort of Calheta's wealthy noble families, today this unspoilt, tranquil spot still produces wine and spirits. Take time to stroll along its cobbled streets, between gardens, vineyards and vegetable gardens.
