It was the first city founded in Madeira upon the arrival of Zarco who is said to have found the tombs of Robert "Machin" and Anne d'Arfet and named the place Machico. The story is probably less romantic as one of the captains of the ship was called Machico. Today the town lives from fishing and especially from tourism. It is a rather pleasant resort, although Santa Cruz is preferred. But the tip of São Lourenço and the golf course of Santo da Serra are not far away. Take a look at the 15th century church and the fort of Nossa Senhora do Amparo, a triangular building built in the 18th century to fight the terrible pirates.
