Close to the airport and Funchal, well located to reach the mountains of the interior or to be carried along the coast, Caniço can be a good choice for those who prefer to stay a little outside the capital without being far from it. It is the tourist colony of the Germans, their well-established base since the 1960s. Renting a car is ideal, but there are regular bus services to the east and west. At the Ponta de Garajau, near the Cristo Rei (a Christ with his arms outstretched facing the ocean), you can watch the ballet of the liners before taking the cable car down to the beach.
