Here again, the emblematic Penha de Águia (Rock of the Eagle) reigns like a king over his green kingdom. This city, known for its rum and dry red wine, with its widely scattered houses, occupies a vast amphitheatre. The tiny fishing village of the past, whose name, "Port de la Croix", comes from the cross that was placed on the shore to indicate the port to Portuguese sailors, has now been converted into a lively little seaside resort. The seafront has been developed towards the small black sand beach, the Praia do Lagoa in the north, and towards the natural pools in the centre. Perhaps the most attractive in Madeira!
