The last town east of Madeira before the mineral point of São Lourenço, Caniçal is one of the five fishing ports on the south coast. The regular arrival of whales in the Abra Bay had allowed the development of a traditional fishing inspired by the techniques of the Azores. With the signing of the moratorium banning whaling, the activity logically stopped abruptly, and the old fishermen converted to carving sperm whale teeth. Madeira's industrial free zone is now part of the landscape and its huge construction site is not very pleasing to the eye ... But Caniçal also has a nice black sand beach
