Built at the beginning of the 19th century by the first Count of Carvalhal, this quinta is one of the most grandiose on the island. It was visited by the Empress Leopoldine (first wife of Dom Pedro IV of Portugal), the infant Dom Luis, King Dom Carlos of Portugal and Dona Maria Amélia or the Duke of Edinburgh. The Blandy family now owns the estate, which is home to a magnificent hotel and a renowned golf course. Of course, not everyone can afford an overnight stay at Casa Velha do Palheiro, but it would be wrong to miss a visit to its sumptuous gardens with anglicizing chic, among the richest on the island
