Kaunas is often considered more Lithuanian (and more nationalistic) than Vilnius, as it is more homogenous in terms of population composition, and is a commercial center (mainly textiles and agri-food). The capital of Lithuania between the wars, Kaunas retains a significant modernist heritage. In 2015, the city became the first in Eastern Europe to be awarded the status of "City of Design" and joined UNESCO's Creative Cities Network. This opening-up of the city to the international scene has enabled it to make a name for itself beyond the region. In 2022, it will be one of the European Capitals of Culture.
