Built at the end of the 19th century under the Tsarist Empire to defend its western borders, Fort No. 9 was transformed by the Nazis into a concentration camp. More than 50,000 Jews died there. The words "We are 900 Frenchmen" are engraved in the stone. Later, under Stalin, it was used as a prison and a place of execution. Today, a museum recalls the Nazi atrocities of the Shoah as well as those committed by the Soviet regime against the Lithuanians. Clearly, one of the unmissable visits of Kaunas.
