AUKŠTIEJI ŠANČIAI CEMETERY

In this cemetery (Lithuanian: Aukštųjų Šančių piliakalnis) lie the two heroes of the city, aviators Steponas Darius and Stasys Girėnas. In 1933, they were the first Lithuanians to attempt the transatlantic flight (from New York). In the middle of the war, they never reached Kaunas, their final destination. Today they are honoured by the country and indeed, you will also notice that today many streets are named after them throughout the country.
