Merkinė, one of the oldest cities in Lithuania, at the confluence of Nemunas and the Merkis River, is the ancient capital of Dzūkija. The art of black ceramics is typical of local crafts. The surrounding landscapes are splendid and deserve a little detour. There is nothing left of the old structure of the village, except the castle hill that is reached by a trail starting from the car park behind the Nemunas bridge. The view from there is beautiful. The th century church of L'Assomption is the most important monument of Merkinė. On the main square, there is also a Russian Orthodox church in the late th century, which houses a small museum on the territory.
