Situated 35 km northwest of the capital, this small village of less than 300 inhabitants on the banks of the River Neris, in a magnificent setting, is more than just a village. For the Lithuanian people, Kernavė is a symbol of their European roots. Many historians consider this village to be one of the cradles of the contemporary Lithuanian state, the presumed site of the country's first capital, from the high Middle Ages to the early 13th century. Its castles stood on several hills along the Neris River, protecting the feudal capital (a strategically important passageway) from invasions and raids.
