Located at the mouth of the Guadalquivir River, Sanlúcar's barrio Alto (upper quarter) lives in the shadow of its Gothic castle. Two great navigators set sail from Sanlúcar: Christopher Columbus in 1498, on his third voyage to America, and Magellan in 1519, on his first circumnavigation of the globe. Today, this town of over 68,000 inhabitants makes its living from summer tourism and the production of manzanilla, a light, dry, slightly salty wine. It's also a fishing port renowned for its seafood, and in winter hosts training sessions for numerous bullfighters. In August, the horse races on the beach are a sumptuous spectacle.
