Alcoutim is a treasure trove of natural Algarve. The town's steep, narrow streets were developed by the trade in minerals transported up the Guadiana to the Mediterranean. Several statues remind us that it was also a cross-border smuggling center until the mid-20th century. The castle overlooking the town offers a fine view of its Spanish neighbor Sanlúcar de Guadiana. It was within these walls that the peace treaty with Castile was signed. Today, the two castles seem to be taunting each other, but the towns are sisters, and their bells ring out almost in unison - just an hour apart!
