Lost deep in the Alentejo, Mértola is an unassuming medieval town built amphitheatrically on the right bank of the Guadiana River. Even in pre-Roman times, Mértola was an important trading center, as it was the northernmost inland port on the great river. It was here that the river crossed the roads that brought bread and olive oil from Beja and minerals from Aljustrel and São Domingos. Not to be missed: the Islamic Art Biennial, held on the last weekend in May. For four days, you'll be immersed in the city's rich Islamic past.
