In the hinterland, 23 km north of Portimão, Monchique is a large town of 6,000 inhabitants at the foot of the mountain range that gives it its name. From there, you can go up to Fóia, the highest point of the Algarve (902 m), or to Picota (773 m), which has many more trees. You can walk along the main street of the village, which is full of souvenir stores and pleasant cafés. Just behind, the church in pure Manueline style is worth a visit. Not far from there, the ruins of the monastery Nossa Senhora do Desterro, never rebuilt after the earthquake, are above the village and can be visited in an unusual way.
