Twenty kilometers east of Tavira, this border town has been somewhat forgotten since Andalusia and the Algarve were linked by highway, but it is popular with Spaniards who come here to shop. Vila Real is a gateway for those who want to go up the Guadiana River to Alcoutim, or cross it to Spain. The city owes its architecture to the Marquis of Pombal, who rebuilt it in 1776 according to the same checkerboard plan as the Baixa in Lisbon. It would have been built in this place to impress the Spanish neighbor as a showcase for the success of Portugal in the era of the great discoveries.
