On the highest peak of the Alcores hills to the east of Seville, Carmona overlooks the fertile Guadalquivir plain. It bears witness to many of the civilizations that have succeeded it, such as the surrounding prehistoric sites of Neolithic origin and traces of the Augustan Way used in the Middle Ages. For the most part, today's layout reproduces the Roman urban plan. The most illustrious site from this period is, of course, the necropolis. But there are also some thirty other monuments, including Mudejar churches and Renaissance palaces. A unique setting that served as the backdrop for Francisco Rosi's film Carmen.
