Palos de la Frontera is another "Colombino" place, as this small municipality of almost 11,000 inhabitants is steeped in history. It was from here, when the town still had a port on the Tinto, that Christopher Columbus first set off with his three caravels to conquer the New World. The muelle de las carabelas, a striking replica of the three caravels, can be found in La Rabida, 4 km away, as well as the monastery where Columbus sought refuge and advice after the Catholic Monarchs' initial refusal. Today, Palos de la Frontera thrives on its strawberry production.
