The town's name comes from the Passage des Echelles, an ancient steep and narrow gorge. The descent was made via ladders, steps cut into the rock that were later levelled to form a road, the so-called Voie Sarde, built in 1670 by Charles-Emmanuel II. The Échelles tunnel was inaugurated in 1820, the final stage in the improvement of this busy road. Worth a visit: the Château du Menuet, the former commandery now the town hall, the church and, of course, the caves. Stendhal owned a house in Les Échelles, and the famous Louis Mandrin is known for his smuggling activities in the area.
