In 1841, Dr. Domenget made a revolutionary discovery that transformed the future of this quiet village: a thermal spring with therapeutic properties. A military doctor in the service of the Savoy royal family, he became a passionate ambassador for Challes water, nicknamed the "Queen of Sulfur" due to its high sulfur content. A spa was built in 1874, then enlarged in 1927 and 1939, and rehabilitated by its current operator, the Chaîne Thermale du Soleil.Challes-les-Eaux is home to the most sulfurous waters in Europe, rising from a depth of over 100 meters. Their sulfur content gives them antibacterial, decongestant, healing and analgesic properties. Medical cures are available for respiratory and gynaecological disorders. Not far from Challes-les-Eaux, the Leysse plateau offers easy access to the Bauges from the Chambéry valley. Discover exceptional hikes, such as the one leading to the "Trou de l'Enfer" via the "Bout du monde". Climb to Mont-Saint-Michel and admire the breathtaking panorama over Chambéry and the Chartreuse from the chapel dedicated to the archangel, erected on the summit since the Middle Ages. Stroll along the shores of Lac de La Thuile, a peaceful, unspoilt refuge, where an all-weather path invites you to take a serene stroll. Challes-les-Eaux is a breath of fresh air in the open air.
