The name of the city comes from the passage of the Ladders, a very old narrow and steep gorge. The descent was made by ladders, steps cut in the rock which were then levelled to form a road, the one that will be called the Sardinian Way, built in 1670 by Charles-Emmanuel II. The last step in the improvement of this busy road was the opening of the Echelles tunnel in 1820. The Menuet castle, the old commandery which became the town hall, the church and of course the caves... Stendhal owned a house in Les Echelles and the famous Savoyard Robin Hood, Louis Mandrin, is known for having smuggled contraband in the area.
