Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse is located in the heart of the Chartreuse massif, today crossed by the road that leads to the Cucheron pass in the north and the Porte pass in the south. It is a real climatic resort. With its 884 inhabitants, Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse is a very large commune (8,012 ha). Indeed, there are two churches, Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse-Village and Saint-Hugues. It is on the territory of the commune that Saint Bruno and his companions built the first monastery of the Carthusian order in the 11th century. It is also here that the precious elixir known all over the world began to flow from the stills. The connoisseurs will be able to find on the slopes of the summits, like the Petit Som or the Grand Som, some of the rare plants which enter in the composition of this nectar, like for example the vulnaria. Be careful, you should not pick more plants than you can hold in your hand. Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse is today a beautiful little mid-mountain resort, which has managed to diversify its tourist activities without losing its rural and artisanal heritage. An authentic mountain village, at an altitude of about 900 m, it is also the best equipped ski resort in the whole massif. In addition to downhill and cross-country skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing and paragliding can be practiced. In summer, hiking enthusiasts will be delighted by the wide variety of trails throughout the park: no less than 1,000 km.
