Champagnac, formerly called Champagnac-les-Mines, has less than 1,000 inhabitants. Located in the heart of the Sumène-Artense region, the village is only a few kilometres from the Dordogne gorges. For a little over a hundred years it was the largest mining centre in the Auvergne. Industrial coal mining began in 1842 and accelerated rapidly forty years later with the arrival of the railway (1882). The peak of the exploitation was reached in 1938, shortly before the industry collapsed. The mine closed in 1959. A museum dedicated to the history of the Champagnac coalfield and its mines is installed in the village.
