Set between two beautiful hills of molasse sand, the site has been occupied since prehistoric times. Men dug troglodyte houses in the molasse, a hundred of which still exist today. Located halfway between Valence and Romans, Châteauneuf-sur-Isère takes its name from a medieval castle that was destroyed at the end of the 16th century during the Wars of Religion. In the 1950s, the modernization of the Bourne canal and the installation of an efficient irrigation system marked the rise of fruit growing, which transformed Châteauneuf into a small fishing capital (up to 40% of the commune was planted with orchards).
