The existence of this village is attested as early as the 13th century. Péage refers to the duties levied on merchandise at the southern entrance to the bridge over the Isère (now Pont Vieux). Bourg-de-Péage was first named Péage-de-Pizançon, on the territory of the lord of Pizançon. The town retained this name until the French Revolution. Baptized Unité-sur-Isère for a few months, it finally adopted the name Bourg-de-Péage. Today, Pizançon is the neighboring commune. In 1680, Péage-de-Pizançon, which had been growing slowly around the tollgate under Roman authority, gained its independence. The town's trade and industry had developed around traditional activities (oil mills, rope-making, cloth-making) and the timber trade from Royans-Vercors. In the 1830s, it was the millinery industry that made the small town rich. Mossant's millinery business manufactured headdresses for elegant women the world over. Unfortunately, like the leather industry, the hat industry suffered a serious crisis in 1957 from which it never recovered. 20 km from Valence, crossed by the 45th parallel north, separated from Romans by the Isère river, at the crossroads of several major communication routes, Bourg-de-Péage is today a dynamic small town of 10,000 inhabitants. Stretching along the banks of the Isère, this charming town is a pleasure to live in. It's a pleasure to stroll along the banks of the Isère.
