The village of Chantemerle is perched at an altitude of 250 m on the northern slope of the Rouvergue plateau, between vineyards and lavender, in the heart of the Tricastin, a few kilometres from the Château de Grignan, hence its name. This place was already inhabited in the Neolithic period, as shown by fragments of carved flint and polished stones discovered on the plateau of the Rouvergue which dominates the village. On this same plateau, you can discover, at random during a walk, many bories, some of them in perfect condition. In the Middle Ages, the village was already recorded in 1178 under the name of Canta Merlis. On the geological level, a particularity is to be noted: it is a phenomenon dating back a few thousand years and forming impressive cliffs due to the elevation of the Rouvergue plateau.
