Chief town of the canton, prefecture of the Ardèche and city at the gates of the Monts d'Ardèche Natural Park, Privas was built on a rocky spur. A major Protestant centre, Privas has a historic and religious heritage, consisting of the ruins of the old Ardèche Huguenot town of the 16th century, which was burned by Louis XIII and then rebuilt. Privas has been classified as a Remarkable Site of Taste by the National Council of Culinary Arts. Its fame as the capital of marron glacé is linked to the company Clément Faugier, founded in 1882, which made marron glacé known throughout the world. A welcoming and gourmet city!
