The village of Nordhouse has its roots in prehistory. Archaeological excavations, carried out a few years ago, attest to this. 500 meters south of the village, in a meander of the Ill river, at the place called Burckelmatt, there is a small group of mounds where tombs dating from the Early Stone Age (400 B.C.), the Hallstatt (600 to 700 B.C.) and the Late Bronze Age (1200 B.C.) have been found. Further excavations at the Ochsenfeld have revealed a Gallo-Roman site dating from the 2nd century. A settlement from the early Middle Ages (8th and 9th centuries) was discovered and studied at the place called Oberfuert.
