Located 40 kilometers from Strasbourg, the commune of Niederhaslach is densely wooded: 40% of its surface area is covered by forest. The Hasel valley once contained just one village, Haslach. It came into being with the construction of the Haslach monastery, founded by Saint Florent in the 7th century. The monastery was converted into a collegiate church in the mid-11th century. The three-aisled collegiate church of Saint-Florent is one of the most representative examples of Gothic architecture in the Bas-Rhin region outside Strasbourg. It's nicknamed "the cathedral's little sister", and is well worth a visit.
