The history of the name of the commune is singular. The word "Ormedo", which appeared on the Redon cartulary in 843, was long considered to be the initial form of the current name of Orvault. In fact, it could be a word that chance would have caused a transcription error by a scribe. Old names of Orvault can be found in the 12th century with Orsvaldum and then in the 13th century with Aurea Vallis, to be translated as Vallée d'Or or Val d'Or, most probably in reference to the carpet of daffodils that once covered the Vallée du Cens in springtime. Over the writings and the centuries, the name has changed to become what it is today. Formerly a rural village, today Orvault is the sixth largest town in the department in terms of population. The green lung of the Nantes area, Orvault is full of sites for cultural, historical and natural walks. In total, there are more than 50 km of hiking trails to discover in the town.
