Locmariaquer "the lock of the gulf" stretches between the bay of Quiberon in the north and the Gulf of Morbihan in the south. The Pointe de Kerpenhir and Port-Navalo, opposite, form the lock that closes the gulf. Here is erected a statue of the Virgin protecting the sailors, hence the origin of the name "the place where Mary lives" in Breton. History has been written here for thousands of years and the numerous megalithic remains bear witness to this. In the middle of the 19th century, when the natural beds of flat oysters began to run out, Napoleon III commissioned the scientist Coste to stem this alarming impoverishment by researching the technique of spat collection and then the rearing of spat in the parks. It was then that Locmariaquer naturally became the cradle of oyster farming. In the seventies, the presence of a parasite called hammered oyster almost sounded the death knell for the flat oyster. From then on, oyster farmers turned to the hollow oyster, or gigas, imported from Japan and raised today by about forty farms in the commune. As for the heritage, one can discover the dolmen of the famous Table des Marchands, the Great Broken Menhir, the Mané-Réthual, the Mané-Lud as well as the dolmen of Kerlud, the Flat Stones, the Ma-er-Letionec or the Tumulus of Er Grah...
