It is one of the most densely populated coastal towns in the Pas-de-Calais département. It occupies a privileged geographical position, facilitating rapid and sustained links with Great Britain (Dover is only 43 km away!). The town has been famous for its lace since the start of the industrial revolution in the late 18th century. Calais is also an excellent starting point for short and long walks. There are 15-20 km coastal paths linking the capes, and for the more adventurous, the GR120, known as the sentier du littoral, runs along the 193 km coastline from Bray-Dunes on the Belgian border to the Baie d'Authie.
