A historic gem, Canterbury is famous for its impressive cathedral, seat of the Anglican Church, located within the medieval walls surrounding the city. Founded by the Romans, the city became the cradle of English Christianity thanks to St. Augustine, the Benedictine monk who created the episcopate of Canterbury in 597. Rome sent Augustine to Canterbury to reintroduce Christianity to southern England. From then on, the Archdiocese of Canterbury became increasingly independent, both religiously and politically. The city is famous for its storytelling. Today, it is the beating heart of Kent and one of England's tourist hotspots.
