Douelle was once the Lot's largest inland waterway center. A village at the heart of the Cahors vineyards, it was here that wine was shipped. It therefore takes its name from its trade in staves (strips of metal) - or douelles - for barrels. Its history is closely linked to the river Lot. Until the 15th century, Douelle was attached to the neighboring village of Caillac. In the 18th century, the commune supplied men for the navy. In the 19th century, Douelle was populated by bargemen, winemakers, coopers, carpenters... until river tourism took over at the end of the 20th century, forever linking the commune to the river.
