10 km north of Ille-sur-Têt, the small hilltop village of Bélesta(Bellestar de la Frontera) boasts a fascinating prehistory museum and the site of the famous Dolmen du Moli del Vent. De la Frontera, because it was the border village between France and Roussillon until the Treaty of the Pyrenees. Fortified early on, the village is an interesting medieval ensemble, with its 12th-century church, lintelled houses and staircases, symbols of the region's rural architecture. The château, built in 1262, subsequently ruined and skilfully restored in the 1980s, remains the village's most interesting architectural feature.
