1,400 inhabitants. Nestled between the Llobregat River and the Cardener, this small village surrounded by steep mountains is famous for having seen the last of the Catalan "maquis" die, a symbolic figure of resistance and struggle against the Franco regime. The village has developed around Castellnou Castle, of which only a few remains remain, and the magnificent church of Sant Andreu, a fine example of the Catalan Lombard novel built in the 11th century.Between the steep hills and groves, the wild panoramas of Castellnou de Bages are also a real paradise for mountain bike enthusiasts. From a landscape point of view, the access to the village from the Santpedor road marks the transition between the Pla de Bages and the rugged terrain typical of the northern half of the Geopark. These changes are explained by the presence of more distal Pyrenean tectonic structures (anticline fold, syncline and faults) that owe their formation to the abundance of salt in the region's subsoils. But they also result from a change in geological time, from the Eocene to the Oligocene, which has been accompanied by a great extinction and a significant cooling of the planet.
