The commune, formerly known as Saint-Jean-la-Chan, owes its name to the La Fouillouse stream that flows through it and originates here. On the last foothills of the Margeride, the village sits at an altitude of 1,323 metres, amid a backdrop of pastures and forests. The 13th-century church, originally a Benedictine chapel, has been restored internally by parishioners, while the bell tower was rebuilt in 1819. Outside, ruins of the former monastery's cloister remain, incorporated into the wall of today's town hall. In the hamlet of Le Cellier, to the north-east of Saint-Jean, a square tower can be seen, which served as a defense and food reserve.
