Cessenon-sur-Orb is one of the oldest towns in the Languedoc, nestling on a hillside on a loop of the Orb. This superb town in circulade seems to emerge from an ocean of vines dominated by a square tower. In the market place, the presence of a fragment of a sarcophagus from the 1st century, embedded in the wall of a house, bears witness to the Roman imprint. Of the old fortress dismantled in 1633, only a few remains remain. A legend says that the name of Cessenon is due to the malignity of the devil who, tired of hearing the bells ring, demanded one day that the bell-ringer stop. A little deaf but courageous, the man answered: no.
