Saint-Chinian nestles in the verdant Vernazobres valley. The village has long depended on the textile industry, as evidenced by its fulling mills, cloth trade and tannery. The vine has been cultivated since the establishment of two monasteries in 826, one dedicated to Saint Laurent, the other to Saint Anian, who became Saint Chinian by deformation. Classified as AOC since 1982, Saint-Chinian wines are among the finest in Languedoc-Roussillon. Not to be missed: the 18th-century Benedictine abbey, now the town hall, and the parish church with its remarkable late 18th-century organs.
