Founded in the 8th century, Aniane owes its origins to Saint-Benoît. Seduced by the site, he built his abbey here. At the end of the Hérault gorges, sheltered by the surrounding hills, the village lies on a green plain, a patchwork of vineyards, gardens and olive groves. The village is steeped in tradition and history, passing through the salt route and stopping off on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. Numerous monuments perfectly illustrate its rich past: the town hall with its magnificent Louis XV façade, the church of Saint-Sauveur, the former parish church of Aniane, known as the church of the Penitents, the covered market and many others.
