Raised on the hills, between fragrant scrubland and pine forest, the small village of Aumes dominates the plain of the Hérault. It lies at the foot of an oppidum, "Le Puech Balat", frequented by several peoples from the 7th to the 1st century BC. It was made up of the rocky plateaux of "Mazes", "Saint-Auby" and "Lico Castel". During the following centuries, the high habitats were abandoned in favour of lower sites or those of the plains. A mutation which contributed in all likelihood to the formation of the present village. A small and fascinating archaeological museum will allow to approach this rich history in an educational and captivating way. The continuation will be discovered in the heart of the village, at the approach of the Notre-Dame chapel (former 13th century Castrale chapel, also called Saint-Pierre) located on the village square, the two castles and the vineyards. Remember to take some height, the panorama over the garrigues, pine forests and vineyards is breathtaking. Viewpoint also on the Château de Marennes with its vineyard.
