The mineral deposits around Salsigne have been exploited since Antiquity, and archaeology allowed to attest that Salsigne was one of the most important mining centers of the Roman province of Narbonne. Iron, copper, silver and lead were extracted from the site whose steel activity dates back to the 1st century BC.Now known to have been the largest gold mine in Europe, the mine of Salsigne, open in 1892, closed in 2004. From the gold discovery to the beginning of the 20th century, about 120 tons of gold were extracted. The gold of Salsigne inspired Anne and Serge Golon, the authors of the saga Angélique, Marquise des Anges, whose heroes, Joffrey, count of Peyrac, and owner of the gold mines of Salsigne, was accused of witchcraft for the wealth that he gained from his mines.
