Built on a rocky outcrop, Montreal's origins date back several hundred thousand years. Its geographical location makes it a privileged fortification site. From the time of Charlemagne onwards, settlements were organized around this high point. The castle, no longer standing, the original church and the ruins of the ramparts date back to the 11th and 12th centuries. Montreal was to suffer the bloody Cathar heresy in the 13th century, and find itself at the heart of the fighting, such was its strategic location. Burned and razed to the ground by the Black Prince, the town also endured the Wars of Religion. The 14th-century collegiate church bears witness to its past splendor.
