In the commune of Villanière is one of the first religious buildings built in the Cabardès: the chapel of Saint-Julien-et-Sainte-Basilisse. The date of its construction is not certain but it could date back to the 6th century. Until the 12th century, the building would have served as a church for the three surrounding communities: Villanière, Salsigne and Lastours. Over the centuries, the state of the chapel has deteriorated; consolidation work at the end of the 1990s has saved its ruins. Also, close to Villanière was the most important gold mine in Western Europe, the Salsigne Gold Mine, which was closed in 2004.
