The origins of this commune date back to prehistoric times - as witnessed by the largest dolmen in the Paris region, the Ardoue stone, found on its territory. During Antiquity, two roads crossed at Saint-Léger, making it an important crossroads. Remains from this period are numerous: amphorae, pottery, tiles, coins, the remains of mills along the Vesgre and a Roman camp on the road to Montfort. In the Middle Ages, the town became a royal castellany, and Robert the Pious built a hunting lodge here - the village's first castle. The church dates from this period, and bears the commune's original name.
