Built on a rocky outcrop, the village of Neauphle-le-Château overlooks the Montfort-l'Amaury plain and lies at the western end of the Versailles plain. In the 19th century, human presence in the area dating back to Neolithic times was revealed by the discovery of carved flint axes, now on display at the town hall. As for etymology, the name Neauphle is of Celtic origin and means "new temple". The town became famous for its Grand-Marnier distillery, which left the town in 2011, but whose buildings still bear its memory; and for the establishment of Établissements Perrier from 1876 to 1990.
