In the heart of the Yveline forest, Clairefontaine once belonged to the Carnutes territory. Situated in the valley formed by the Rabette river, the village owes its name to the Latin Clara Fontana (clear water). In 1160, Simon II de Montfort founded a convent of Benedictine nuns at Saint-Rémy-des-Landes. A château was later built on the site of the abbey, which was destroyed during the French Revolution. There was also an abbey, Notre-Dame de Clairefontaine, founded in 1100 and entrusted to the Canons Regular of Saint-Augustin, then to abbots. Today, Clairefontaine is home to the Centre National du Football.
