There are about 700 inhabitants in Châtres, the  rural commune covering a little more than 1 500 ha. The village has been crossed since the 18th century by the large straight road connecting Paris to Rozay through Tournan and Fontenay: the village is typically an area of passage and exchange. It is a fertile territory which is well watered and of agricultural tradition. The commune stretches on a plateau with a low relief, bordered by the upper part of Bréon River which digs its valley downstream to Fontenay-Trésigny. You will find on this territory typical landscapes of Brie, with a succession of wheat, corn, sugar beet or market gardening fields alternating between forest massifs. The built heritage of this town is quite extensive with castles, Briard farms, dovecotes. In the village, you will find a bread distributor at 19 rue de Melun, and food-trucks on Tuesdays (pizza) and Thursdays (Creole cuisine), at the town hall square. There is also a mobile hairdresser-barber who stops in Châtres on Wednesdays and Thursdays.Châtres is also the new ZAC of Val Bréon, a 140-hectare concerted development zone located in the northeast of the town, which accommodates the Parc Logistique Paris Val Bréon, the largest private development zone in the Île-de-France region. This ZAC benefits from the proximity of the RN4 (Paris/Nancy) and RN36 (Melun/Meaux) interchanges. It is also halfway between the Tournan-en-Brie and Marles-en-Brie train stations and the Gretz-Armainvilliers-Sézanne line, which runs along the north side of the development zone. The first company to move in was Ikea in 2005, with 32,000 m² of expandable space. Then came Conforama, Castorama, Kuehne+Nagel, ID Logistics, Groupe Heppner and CENPAC that is, 7 huge warehouse buildings in all covering an area of 380,000 m².
